I've been pretty lazy about exercising lately (and about writing posts). Beyond my walking commute I haven't really done much extra. Clearly I needed a kick-start.

Recipe Friday- Asian Style Braised Pork Belly A few weeks back I saw pork belly at my local market. While I wasn't up for the preplanning and time it takes to make bacon, I was still intrigued and wanted to try to do something with it. Much like with ox tails (and that's another post) pork belly responds quite well to braising. So armed with a cast iron dutch oven and ingredients I already had on hand, that's what I did.
Rich, flavorful and fatty (but in a good way) this is definitely a once in a while dish.

Lost in Translation Last weekend, after our meal of Filipino food, we also made our way to Kam Man market. This a a large Asian marketplace that has a grocery store, and 5 and Dime type place, and many little stalls with various herbs and knick-nacks.

Dining Adventure! Filipino Food in Quincy This Saturday a faithful group of food adventures piled in the car and set out for culinary adventure. After a few wrong turns and GPS SNAFUs we finally arrived at our destination JnJ Turo Turo- a little family style Filipino restaurant in Quincy MA.
In our excitement our table of 5 pretty much ordered every special they has that day. These were brought to our table with a large steam bowl of rice. After some pausing for photographic evidence, we dug in.
Felted Flower Success As some of you know, I had a grand plan to use felted flowers for my wedding bouquet. This idea seemed fun, crafty, and a perfect way to personalize the wedding ceremony a bit more.

Fortunately, or unfortunately I am on a project team at work for a HUGE project with a very agressive timeline. This means I spend most of my days in meetings, and my evenings catching up on my regular work. This leaves little time for blogging...or much else, as a matter of fact. So just a warning that over the next few weeks posts will be sporadic at best.
That said, Sean posted something so you could go read that.
Thanks for your patience.

Recipe Friday: Lemon and Lavender Soda Recipe Friday: Lemon and Lavender Soda
I was first introduced to Lavender Lemonade by my friend T, at her Jane Austin party (it was faboo...so many tiny sandwiches). I was hooked on the perfumey, but fresh taste (lavender is part of the mint family) which was flowery without being cloying.

Move over Cheese-steak Since part of my family moved to Philadelphia, it has become a regular destination for travel. On our first trip we of course waited in line for the obligatory cheese-steak....paying close attention to ordering conventions and praticing how we wanted our food before we got to the fast moving order takers at the counter. Even after waiting in line 45min, I was happy. My cheese-steak was quite good, dripping with cheese-wiz, mushrooms, and juicy steak. My arteries on the other hand, might not agree.
Enter in the lesser know but equally, if not more delicious sandwich...Roast Pork and Broccoli rabe.

Everyone knows that not only does the U.S.A have an easy name to chant at the Olympics, we have the best superheroes in the known universe. Our superheroes can fly, have super strength, heat vision and all kinds of other such powers. Or sometimes they're just freaks with tons of cash and nifty gadgets. Our superheroes are so cool in fact that they inspire filmmakers in foreign lands to make documentaries about them . The most popular subject is of course one of the most recognizable of all the caped wondermen. Superman!
Sometimes repetition is a good thing. Say when you're studying for a test or learn a new skill. It can help develop good habits. It can also drive you insane. I'm not sure if these fall into the good or bad category of repetition. Truly, only you can be the judge.
As some of you who were raised in the shadow of the papacy know, this is the first week of Lent. My understanding is that this is when Jesus said that it's ok to eat fish, because they don't have any feelings. He then went on to play a big practical joke on his friends by dying and coming back to life. Guilt mongers that they are, Catholics have a long standing tradition of giving up something for Lent. When you're a kid, it's something you love, like candy or transformers. Well, I'm going to give up not posting Friday videos......not sure that's a sacrifice, but whatever, bring me some fish, on with the videos. Read more...
I'm putting all my faith in the groundhog this year. That little bugger has predicted more winter(not a tough call) and for once, I almost hope he's right. You see, this year I got a good deal on snowshoes, but the necessary conditions, the confluence of a decent amount of quality snow and a day off, have not occured for me.
Sometimes life just hands you a moldy ham sandwich and you have no choice but to take a bite. That's what most of this week was like. But it's Friday, I've got mass effect 2 waiting for me, and a clear horizon for the weekend. And so, I need to bring myself cheer.
These guys always seem to do that.
crap, it's train time....see you next week!
have a drink for the dearly departed Joey, Dee Dee and Johnny
Beggin Strips Remember that piece of pork belly I put in salt a few weeks back? Last week I turned it into a magical thing....BACON! That's right, salty, peppery, slightly smokey bacon. And boy howdy was it good.
I know everything I need to know about birds.
Pork Belly Futures When asked by my friend Smalerie (visit smalerie.com today!) if I wanted to split some pork belly, I hastily agreed. I finally got around to making bacon of my own this weekend, or well starting the week long process. So I defrosted the pork, pulled out the curing salt, and away I went. I must admit that up to this point, it's moron simple And really, it's a timeless method of food preservation, so that's no surprise. Read more...
